The name Cuddybum most directly comes from the founder’s childhood, where Cuddybum Branch still flows through family farmland where he grew up. Beyond this, a little research reveals that the name is most likely of Scottish origin, where it may be a misspelling of “Cuddy burn” or “Cuddy’s burn”. Somebody apparently had bad handwriting and smushed the “r” and the “n”. From St. Cuthbert's Way: A Pilgrims' Companion by Mary Low, the word “Cuddy” in Scottish history can either refer to a horse or pony or more famously to St. Cuthbert (634-687 AD), a monk and bishop of the Hiberno-Scottish mission. The word “burn”, in Gaelic, refers to fresh water. So I guess without too much of a stretch you could say that Cuddybum most nearly is Gaelic for St Cuthbert’s Creek or just Horse Creek.
